Romney’s Quiet Tea Party

I’ve had little time of late for blogging, but as Santorum and Gingrich continue to misrepresent themselves to voters as “the most conservative” candidates, I had to comment on one observation. It occurred to me that a number of avid Tea Party adherents, and other likeminded voters have recently endorsed Mitt Romney. I speak to this issue as a Freedom Works member in my own community. You won’t read much about this in any conservative print, but you will hear it from the left– but not until the general election.

In addition to Kelly Ayotte, Chris Christie, Nikki Haley, Jeff Sessions, Mike Lee, Jason Chaffetz, and a host of other elected conservatives and tea party favorites, grassroots groups in some locations recognize a true conservative record when they see it.

Here is a partial list of voices from the Tea Party who are smart enough, and bold enough to make known their Romney preference.
• Maribeth Schmidt, Co-Founder Of Rattle With Us
• Dennis Moore, Founder/Former Director-Willow Run Tea Party Caucus
• Lisa Audette And Patty McMurray, Red Heels On The Ground
• Rose Drouillard, Brighton Tea Party Board Member
• Teri Adams, co-founder of the Independence Hall Tea Party PAC
• Mark Skoda, Chairman, Memphis Tea Party and host of his own radio show

But it’s not just a few isolated voices. If you review already completed primary results, you might be surprised to learn a few trends. In Nevada, for instance. Romney won 51 percent of voters who described themselves as “very conservative” and a plurality of those who described themselves as strongly supportive of the Tea Party movement, according to post polling surveys.

As early as October, Romney’s support among some tea party members was evident. A Public Policy Polling survey revealed last fall that while Romney garnered only 13 percent of Tea Party support, this ranked him 4th of 8 candidates in the race at that time. Herman Cain and Rick Perry held the top two spots in that poll, and Michelle Bachmann was third.

So, while most of the media, particularly those from the far right blogosphere will keep trying to tell you that no true patriot will support Romney, the truth is that many are already in Mitt’s camp.
