I just finished watching the ABC debate and I thought I’d share a few quick thoughts. For the most part it wasn’t a very eventful night, but there were a few key moments. So here, without further ado, here are my winners and losers:
Mitt Romney – Excellent night. Mostly an A+ performance. He had a couple moments where he was truly inspirational talking about the country and the founding principles and the economy. There were a couple moments where I felt he was elaborating too much, but overall, an excellent night. No one really attacked him and the few attacks that were presented he knocked out of the ballpark. The most awkward part of the debate was his interchange with George about contraception, but it also led to the quote of the night: “Contraception is working just fine. Leave it alone.” That was the moment where the pressure was put back on George to move on to another question, and when he tried to press the issue, the audience booed him.
Contraception – Because of that quote by Mitt Romney. Enough said.
George Stephanopoulos – It was very obvious that George was annoyed when the contraception question got turned on its head and made him look bad. It ended up with the audience booing him. Not a good night for him.
The rest of the candidates were at par. None of them made major errors. None of them were flawless. Each had small mistakes, and most of them will probably remain where they are in the polls. The potential exception could be Newt Gingrich. While he had one or two bad moments (Ron Paul’s attack on draft dodging), but he also had some of the greatest applause lines of the night. For the most part, the Newt that excels in debates was only present for a small portion of the debate tonight. Ron Paul had one or two moments where he was actually very inspiring and I liked what he was saying, but I can’t reconcile with a couple of his policies that just aren’t mainstream.
What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
